US Treasury Targets Leaders of Cartel del Noreste
The US Treasury Department has identified two prominent figures from a terrorist organization called the Cartel del Noreste, associated with Los Zetas. This action effectively freezes their assets and properties, making it illegal for US entities and individuals to engage in business with them.
Treasury officials indicated that the CDN-Los Zetas is actively conducting terrorist activities that threaten both US citizens and communities in Mexico. As highlighted, Los Zetas has complete control over Nuevo Laredo and parts of Tamaulipas, expanding its operations across several Mexican states. Beyond drug trafficking and human smuggling, these cartels are implicated in violence, intimidation, and murder.
Members of the Los Zetas CDN cartel are linked to the alarming disappearance of countless innocent individuals throughout Mexico.
One of the people singled out by the US government’s actions is Miguel Angel de Andezma. Authorities have stated that he is one of the top leaders within CDN, as well as a key player in arms trafficking. Reports suggest that De Anda was involved in organizing a group of gun purchasers in Texas who then smuggled firearms into Mexico.
Another individual mentioned in the government measures is Ricardo “Mando” Gonzalez Sauceda. According to reports, he was arrested by Mexican authorities earlier this year shortly after former President Donald Trump warned Mexico of potential tariffs related to the cartel’s connections with the government.
In 2022, the Treasury disclosed that the CDN-Los Zetas cartel had staged a terrorist-style attack on the US consulate in Nuevo Laredo, which occurred following the capture of the cartel’s former leader. New details have emerged indicating that not only did gunmen open fire on the building, but they also tossed grenades, resulting in the consulate being closed for over a month. During the attack, the US State Department did not provide any official statement. Recent information has confirmed previous reports stemming from other sources.
