The United States on Tuesday vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, but proposed its own resolution calling for a “temporary” ceasefire. Got ready.
The resolution, introduced by Algeria, was passed by a vote of 13 to 1, with the UK abstaining. A ceasefire would end the war with Hamas still intact and able to carry out attacks.
America swayed As one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, it has veto power. However, as Breitbart News reported, the US is also preparing an alternative resolution to prevent Israel from destroying the last Hamas battalion in Rafah.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said: explained Veto rights in statements:
Moving forward with the vote today was wishful thinking and irresponsible.
Therefore, while we cannot support a resolution that would jeopardize delicate negotiations, we look forward to working on a document that we believe will address so many of the concerns we all share. . So that a temporary ceasefire can be concluded as soon as possible on the basis that all hostages will be released.
This temporary ceasefire is critical to getting aid into the hands of Palestinian civilians who desperately need it.
Israel is adamant that it needs to attack Hamas in Rafah to fulfill its objective of annihilating Hamas as a military threat. They are also concerned that Hamas could use Rafah to transport weapons or hostages into Gaza, which lies beneath the Egyptian border.
Israel on Tuesday quashed speculation that Yahya Sinwar, the local leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, had escaped from Gaza via Rafah through a tunnel. Shinwar hasn’t been heard from for several weeks, but footage of his underground activities has been released.
