The United States on Thursday exercised its veto power in the United Nations Security Council, blocking any unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state.
For decades, American policy has insisted that a Palestinian state should emerge after negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Still, the Biden administration remained silent until the final hours of the U.N. Security Council vote, and the White House dodged questions about a possible veto until the State Department announced the U.S. position early Thursday.
Ambassador Robert Wood explained the US vote. Said:
The United States has worked tirelessly and determinedly to support Palestinian statehood in the context of a comprehensive peace agreement that permanently resolves the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Since the October 7 attacks, President Biden has made clear that sustainable peace in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution that guarantees Israel’s security. There is no other path that guarantees Israel’s security and future as a democratic Jewish state.
There is no other way to ensure that Palestinians can live in peace and dignity in their conditions. And there is no other path leading to regional integration between Israel and all its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.
And we have long been clear that premature action here in New York, even with the best of intentions, will not achieve statehood for the Palestinian people.
As members of the Security Council, we have a special responsibility to ensure that our actions promote the cause of international peace and security and are consistent with the requirements of the United Nations Charter.
There is no consensus among the Admissions Committee as to whether the applicant meets the criteria for membership as set out in Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations, as reflected in the Admissions Committee’s report. It was.
For example, there is an open question as to whether an applicant meets the criteria to be considered a state.
We have long called on the Palestinian Authority to make the necessary reforms to help establish state readiness, but now the terrorist organization Hamas has It must be noted that it wields power and influence in Gaza, an integral part of which it operates.
For these reasons, the United States voted “no” to this Security Council resolution.
The US has tried to portray a Palestinian state as opposed to “Hamas and its supporter Iran,” but Hamas condemned US veto.
Israel welcomed the veto. The Israeli government has opposed recognition of a Palestinian state both inside and outside the United Nations, arguing that recognizing a Palestinian state under the current circumstances would reward Hamas for its terrorism.
