UAB Football Player Charged in Stabbing Incident

A UAB football player, Daniel Israel Mincey, faces serious charges after allegedly stabbing two teammates just hours before a game on Saturday. Following an initial court appearance on Monday, his bond was set at $90,000, according to online court records.

Mincey, a redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. The incident occurred in the football operations center before the game against South Florida. The specifics surrounding the altercation haven’t been fully disclosed yet.

According to the Jefferson County Jail’s online inmate survey, Mincey was arrested around 1 p.m. and is currently being held on the aforementioned bail amount. As of now, the identity of his attorney remains undisclosed.

UAB officials confirmed that two players were injured and a third was taken into custody, although the names of those involved were not initially released. However, court records later identified the injured players as defensive linemen Joshua Underwood and Jasiah Peterson. Underwood is a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, while Peterson is a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey.

Mark Ingram, UAB’s Athletic Director, mentioned in a press conference on Monday that the decision to proceed with Saturday’s game wasn’t made lightly. It followed careful deliberation and discussions with the players.

“We recognized the gravity of what happened on Saturday morning and very seriously considered not playing the game,” he stated. “It was a tough decision, but we felt comfortable moving forward after confirming that the injured players were stable and discussing everything with the team.”

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen also shared updates, noting that both injured players have since been released from the hospital. “I had the chance to speak with them and their families, and they’re doing well,” he said. “We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.”

Mortensen added that some players opted against playing in the game. The team’s final match of the season is set against Tulsa on Saturday, though he expects some players might choose not to participate again. “The last few days have been emotionally tough for many of the players. Their bond is incredible,” he remarked.
