Uber Driver Detained for "Aggravated Kidnapping" of Female Passenger

Incident Involving Uber Driver in Friendswood, Texas

Authorities in Friendswood, Texas, have taken an Uber driver into custody following an incident involving a female passenger. It was reported that the driver, Sammy Chami, 49, faced accusations related to inappropriate behavior with the woman, who was later rescued by a relative monitoring her location.

The 21-year-old woman had requested a ride from Chami outside a Galveston bar in the early hours of June 28, aiming to get home, which is roughly a 40-minute drive away. She had informed her family about her plans and later alerted them that she had fallen outside her residence. However, when she didn’t arrive home, her family utilized her phone’s tracking capabilities to locate her. They found Chami with her in an empty parking lot several miles from her house.

When confronted, Chami claimed that the woman had “fallen asleep,” failing to clarify why he stopped in such a secluded area. Meanwhile, the woman acknowledged having been drinking but asserted that she remembered Chami making unwanted physical advances.

Following a thorough investigation, Friendswood police reviewed surveillance footage showing Chami exiting the driver’s seat and entering the back seat with the woman.

On August 6, the police charged him with aggravated assault. They noted that Chami intentionally ended the ride at her house while she remained in the vehicle. Additionally, the Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency requested his detention based on his immigration status, though details about that have not been made public.

An Uber representative confirmed that Chami’s driver account has been terminated, and he is no longer permitted to work for the platform. The spokesperson expressed concern over such incidents occurring and stated that security is a priority for Uber. They mentioned the company’s commitment to continually enhancing safety features and collaborating with experts to prevent such occurrences.

The broader issue of sexual assault within ride-sharing services continues to be a significant concern. Reports suggest that these incidents tend to spike during late-night hours, particularly on weekends, when people often rely on these services for safety. Statistics reveal that Uber has faced an alarming number of reports, totaling over 400,000 allegations of sexual assault and misconduct from 2017 to 2022.

This situation highlights ongoing debates around the gig economy, including the implications of allowing undocumented immigrants to work in such roles, potentially affecting job availability and wages for many American workers.
