UC Berkeley Turning Point USA event goes on following Charlie Kirk's death

Turning Point USA Event Continues Amid Tensions at UC Berkeley

Conservative students at UC Berkeley, recognized for its liberal reputation, are moving forward with a “Turning Point USA” event that was initially set to be headlined by Charlie Kirk before his tragic death.

John Paul Leon, a junior and the president of Berkeley’s Turning Point chapter, reflected on the timing, noting, “The day we announced Charlie was coming was the day he was killed.” He mentioned that since then, he has been collaborating with both the university and the national Turning Point organization to ensure the event’s success.

The event, dubbed “This Is the Turning Point,” is slated for November 10, two months following Kirk’s assassination while he was speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. Comedian Rob Schneider and Christian author Frank Turek will fill in for Kirk.

Leon did not want to reveal specific security measures but indicated there would be a no-bag policy and rigorous safety protocols for both attendees and speakers. He emphasized the group’s commitment to ensuring security, mentioning their internal conferences dedicated to addressing such concerns.

Despite the somber atmosphere since Kirk’s death, Leon observed that students are stepping up to honor his legacy. He remarked, “There’s a lot of passion behind this, and it’s more about the sentiment of people feeling the need to push back or fight harder than ever.” Interestingly, he mentioned a surge in membership following Kirk’s death, as many students, previously uninvolved, have joined the organization.

However, the group is not without its challenges. Leon noted a significant backlash, including posters labeling them as fascists and personal encounters with hostility when they engage in campus events. He mused that, before the assassination, these accusations felt more like exaggerated caricatures; now, they resonate more deeply.

He described the current climate as a “spiritual battle,” a perspective Kirk himself understood well. Leon believes that this ongoing conflict transcends mere political discourse.

Dan Moguloff, an assistant vice chancellor at UC Berkeley, stated that the university is committed to allowing speakers of all viewpoints at student-sponsored events. He added that the Turning Point USA event qualifies as a significant event, necessitating adherence to the university’s major events policy, given the expected audience size of over 300 people.
