UCF football assistant Shawn Clark passes away suddenly at 50

The UCF football team is mourning the unexpected loss of offensive line coach Sean Clark, who passed away on Sunday night, as the team reported.

Clark was 50 years old.

In a statement, coach Scott Frost reflected, “Shaun was more than just a coach. He was an amazing man, husband, and father who genuinely cared about his players and staff. The response from our players and coaches this morning really shows the kind of impact Sean had on everyone he encountered. He was deeply loved.”

He added, “Our thoughts are with his wife, Jonell, and their children, Jayana and Braxton. We are here for them during this difficult time and will hold them in our hearts and prayers.”

The exact cause of Clark’s passing has not yet been disclosed.

He had been hospitalized since September 9 due to a medical emergency and had been in stable condition before his sudden death on Sunday.

This season marked Clark’s first year at UCF after serving as the head coach at Appalachian State for five seasons.

UCF’s vice president and athletics director, Terry Mohazil, expressed sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken by Sean’s passing. He embodied passion, integrity, and genuine love for those around him. Sean will be remembered not just for his contributions to the game but for the strong relationships he built and the example he set as a husband and father.”

Before his coaching career, Clark played as an offensive lineman at App State, achieving national recognition twice.

During his coaching journey, he also spent time at Eastern Kentucky, Purdue, and Kent before returning to App State.

ESPN College Football’s Marty Smith shared his sadness about Clark’s passing, posting, “I’m so sad. Shaun Clark was a dear friend and brother. We shared countless laughs and tears. He was truly the best man—caring, diligent, and unfailingly loyal.”

Clark is survived by his wife Jonell and their two children, Jayana and Braxton.

UCF started the season strong, currently holding a 3-0 record after their recent victory over North Carolina, where they won 34-9 on Saturday.
