UCLA baseball claims Big Ten Tournament championship in an unusual moment

UCLA Baseball Team Excels in Dramatic Tournament Wins

The UCLA baseball team seems to always find a way to win, and they definitely did it in style this weekend.

On Friday, the Bruins secured a victory with a walk-off sacrifice fly. Then, on Saturday, it was a walk-off homer. But, perhaps the most unforgettable moment came on Sunday, where they delivered an unexpected performance during the Big Ten Tournament.

In a nail-biting finish at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, a pitch that was initially ruled to have brushed against Phoenix Cole with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning underwent a review. Ultimately, the call stood, leading to a 3-2 win over Oregon, marking UCLA’s first Big Ten Tournament championship.

Cole couldn’t help but smile at first base when the decision was announced. “It’s another come-from-behind victory, and we’re done. So, let’s go,” said UCLA’s Mulibai Rev, who played a crucial role in earlier games with a memorable walk-off against Purdue and then a three-run shot against USC.

With a record now standing at 51-6, UCLA has amassed an astonishing 28 comeback wins, but this one feels distinctly remarkable.

They entered the ninth inning trailing by a run. Peyton Brennan walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then crossed home plate thanks to Aidan Espinoza’s single. Easton Hoke, UCLA’s closer, struck out five batters in three innings, solidifying the team’s momentum as the game progressed.

As the 11th inning began, Roman Martin and Brennan ignited the rally with back-to-back singles against Oregon State’s Devin Bell. Although the Ducks attempted a sacrifice bunt that loaded the bases, Bell struggled to make the play, and his subsequent two strikeouts were followed by hitting Cole, sealing the game.

Post-game celebrations involved fist bumps and hugs, wrapping up rivalries that had sparked earlier this month during a heated three-game series.

Notably, the game had its share of tension. UCLA shortstop Will Gasparino was ejected after a collision during a rundown, sparking controversy. Oregon’s Burke Lee Mabeus also faced reprimand for unsportsmanlike conduct after a home run, showcasing the game’s charged atmosphere.

“We just fight a lot, you know?” Coach Jon Savage reflected on his team’s resilience. “They trust each other, and that’s been a constant this season.”

What It Means

If the ejection stands, Gasparino will miss the opening game of the NCAA Tournament Regional, a significant blow for the Bruins.

Turning Point

Key moments in the ninth inning included Hocking, who replaced Gasparino, executing a successful sacrifice bunt. This pattern continued in the 11th as he bunted again with the bases full.

MVP: Easton Hoke

Hoke secured the win with three scoreless innings, a notable shift from the previous day where he yielded two runs, effectively ending a 25-inning scoreless stretch.

Looking Ahead

The Bruins are heavily favored to be the top seed in the NCAA Tournament and will kick off regional play at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday, with the matchup details to be revealed on Monday.
