UCLA Suffers Setback in Big Ten Tournament

CHICAGO — Things deteriorated for UCLA midway through the first half of their game on Saturday, especially since they were already missing their top scorer.

Point guard Donovan Dent, who had made a significant impact with his recent return, limped off to the locker room, accompanied by the team doctor.

What happened next was quite surprising.

Despite facing the odds with a lineup of mostly reserves, UCLA managed to stay level with Purdue, tied with less than four minutes left during the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

However, it became evident that the Bruins lacked both depth and star power to maintain their performance.

The sixth-seeded Bruins ultimately lost 73-66 to the seventh-seeded Boilermakers at the United Center.

Now, there’s hope that UCLA can regain full strength ahead of their NCAA Tournament opener next week.

Dent suffered an injury to the lower part of his right leg and didn’t return after only ten minutes of play. Luckily, the injury isn’t thought to be serious; he returned to the bench just before halftime, sporting a white sleeve on his leg.

Yet, in what seemed to foreshadow further issues, Dent didn’t participate in warm-ups for the second half.

There was a bit of good news regarding forward Tyler Bilodeau, who watched from the sidelines in a black sweatsuit. He had only a mild sprain in his right knee from the previous game against Michigan State, with no structural damage reported.

What It Means

UCLA had been playing some of its best basketball this season, hoping to carry that momentum into March.

A win in this game could have paved the way for a promising tournament ahead, especially considering the absence of both Bilodeau and Dent.

Now, they need to quickly regroup and hope for the return of their key players.

Turning Point

With under four minutes left, Trent Perry made an impressive dunk off a pass from Brandon Williams, tying the game at 62-62. But Purdue’s Oscar Clough quickly responded with a tip-in, and guard CJ Cox scored on a breakaway layup following a Perry turnover. Clough followed up with another putback, extending Purdue’s lead to six with just two minutes to go.

MVP

Thankfully, the Bruins had Dr. David McAllister, their chief physician and director of sports medicine, on hand. Injuries to both Dent and Bilodeau kept him occupied, but his expertise helped the players stay informed about the severity of their situations.

To the Next

UCLA will find out its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday afternoon. Most projections suggest they could be a 7th or 8th seed.
