UCLA Basketball Faces Changes After Major Loss

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The UCLA Bruins are set for some adjustments following their significant defeat over the weekend.

Coach Mick Cronin acknowledged the need to tackle selfish behaviors that had negatively impacted the team. After losing 86-56 to Michigan, he mentioned that there might be a lineup change, potentially more than one.

With Skye Clark returning, could we see a three-guard setup? And what about Eric Daley Jr. — has his lack of production led to less playing time?

The Bruins struggled in the second half, managing only one assist and hitting just 25.9% of their shots. They fared even worse from beyond the arc, making only 1-of-10 attempts, and shockingly, eight of those shots were uncontested.

“We missed a wide-open shot and then avoided passing, screening, or running,” Cronin expressed frustration with his team’s performance. “I’m really frustrated with some of our team.”

Additionally, Cronin didn’t single anyone out, but Daley seems likely to see fewer minutes. He’s been underwhelming, with only one assist in his last three games. In the latest match, he picked up two quick fouls, registering just three points, two rebounds, and no assists in 14 minutes.

“I want players who will prioritize the team over individual stats,” Cronin emphasized. “Our strategy involved avoiding bad shots and turnovers, but at times, we simply failed to execute. We look fantastic in moments, but then we fall into bad habits.”

Clark’s return from injury offers Cronin extra options, including a quicker pace by pairing him with guards Donovan Dent and Trent Perry. Clark, who scored eight points in his comeback game, seems optimistic. “I definitely think we can create some tough matchups for opponents,” he mentioned.

Two other players, guard Ja’Marr Brown and center Stephen Jamerson II, might also see extended minutes due to their tenacity and willingness to make the plays others don’t.

Perry, a pivotal player for the Bruins, expressed his commitment. After leading the team with 14 points against Michigan, he stated, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win.”

Looking ahead, fans can expect some shifts in the lineup when UCLA faces No. 10 Michigan State on Tuesday. The hope is that these changes will help reduce selfish play and the team’s frustration.

“I’m annoyed with some players who may not be fully invested in the team’s effort,” Cronin confessed. “But it’s my responsibility to navigate this. Such is coaching.”
