UCLA quarterback hopes to come back in 2027 — but is there shared interest?

Nico Iamaleava, the injured quarterback, has expressed his commitment to returning to UCLA next season instead of pursuing the NFL draft or transferring to another school, according to his agent, Joe Barnes. This announcement came on Thursday evening.

Iamaleava is set to undergo surgery next week for torn knee ligaments, with the procedure being conducted by the respected orthopedic surgeon Neal ElAttrache. According to Barnes, he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the fall training camp.

However, whether Iamaleava returns will depend on several factors, such as his potential role with the team and the type of compensation he would be willing to accept, especially given the severity of his injury that limited him to just five games this season.

Meanwhile, Ty Dieffenbach has stepped up significantly in Iamaleava’s absence, guiding the unbeaten and seventh-ranked Bruins (7-0) to notable victories over Oregon, Wisconsin, and others.

Dieffenbach still has a year of eligibility left, which complicates the situation for UCLA’s coaching staff as they ponder their options for the 2027 season. Should they continue with Dieffenbach, who has been performing well since taking over, or revert to Iamaleava, who has an impressive skill set, especially in rushing? But then again, there’s uncertainty surrounding his performance after such a serious injury.

It might also make sense for the coaches to evaluate potential transfers before they settle on a strategy or kick off a quarterback competition.

Add to this the presence of Madden Iamaleava, Nico’s younger brother, who is currently Dieffenbach’s primary backup. If he continues to improve over the summer, he could also emerge as a contender for the starting position.

While Nico Iamaleava is well-loved by his teammates for his determination and leadership qualities, it’s worth noting that his performance this season wasn’t stellar. Before his injury against Oregon—when he was hit by two defenders—he completed 62.1% of his passes for 982 yards, thrown 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, and rushed for 144 yards along with one touchdown.

Since Iamaleava’s injury, Dieffenbach has showcased a lot of confidence, completing 61.4% of his passes for 505 yards, accumulating 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. The Bruins have maintained their offensive strength and are in a strong position for a potential College Football Playoff appearance.

In his first remarks since the injury, Iamaleava hinted at his hopes to return. He shared on Instagram, “I’m heartbroken the way my season ended. I’ve finally accepted that this year is really over for me. This wasn’t a part of the plan, but I believe everything happens for a reason. I’ve given this game and my brothers everything I had, and I’ll continue to lean on God and trust His plan. I’ll be back.”

If everything aligns as Iamaleava envisions, he could indeed be throwing passes for the Bruins in 2027.
