UCLA Softball Dominates Central Florida with Walk-off Home Run
UCLA’s softball team showcased their power on the field, but it wasn’t the expected stars who made headlines this time.
Riley Slim, the leadoff hitter, delivered a walk-off, three-run home run, surprising her teammates and perhaps even herself, as she wasn’t fully aware they were in run-rule territory at that moment. The game concluded with a resounding 9-1 victory against Central Florida in the NCAA Tournament Super Region opener held at Easton Stadium.
“Actually, I had no idea,” she remarked after crossing home plate, joining her teammates in a flurry of celebration. The Bruins, now at a remarkable 51-8 record, are just one win away from advancing to the Women’s College World Series. Kaniyah Bragg also made a significant contribution with a three-run homer, while Bri Alejandre added a solo shot, amplifying the offensive momentum.
With those three homers, UCLA’s single-season NCAA record for home runs increased to an astonishing 196. This win also marked their 29th run-rule victory this season, surpassing last year’s record of 28.
“If the offense does what it’s supposed to do, we’re going to take it day by day,” said Bruins coach Kelly Inouye Perez.
On the pitching side, Taylor Tinsley (31-6) was in excellent form, limiting the Knights (41-18-1) to just three hits, including a solo home run from Sierra Humphreys during the fifth inning.
Significance of the Game
The game’s early conclusion was particularly beneficial for Tinsley, who might be tasked to pitch in every match of this series. “It’s very important that she escaped the bullet, because tomorrow is a big day,” Inouye Perez mentioned.
Key Moments
In the fourth inning, with a one-run lead, UCLA extended their advantage with two more runs—Sujin Berry contributing an RBI grounder and Ramsey Suarez coming through with a double down the left field line.
Tinsley found this offensive support comforting. “It definitely makes me feel a little bit more relaxed on the mound just having run support,” she noted, expressing enthusiasm about her team’s performance. “It’s fun to see everyone succeed, and I know they’ve got my back.”
Player Highlight: Riley Slim
Slim hit an impressive 16 home runs this season, which is a remarkable feat for a leadoff hitter. Of course, having sluggers like Megan Grant and Jordan Woolley in the lineup certainly influences the quality of pitches she sees.
“I think it actually takes a lot of pressure off just knowing I have eight great hitters behind me,” Slim shared. “At the end of the day, my job is just to touch first base. I trust the people behind me to get the job done.” She described a sense of relief, feeling as if the game runs on autopilot due to that trust.
Next Steps
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Pacific, with the matchup airing on ESPN.
