UCLA Softball Reflects on Recent Defeat, Eyes Upcoming Tournament
Even amidst a setback, there was a sense of positivity surrounding the UCLA softball team.
For them, the primary goal remains achievable. “We’re heading into next week all geared up and ready,” Megan Grant, a key player, mentioned after the Bruins faced a loss against Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament final. “It’s about keeping our spirits high, staying focused, and when we step back on the field, we’ll do it with energy.”
Anticipating their next challenge, UCLA discovered Sunday that they will host an NCAA Tournament regional at Easton Stadium. They are set to square off against California Baptist in the opening game on Friday at 7 p.m. PT.
In another match, Cal State Fullerton will face South Carolina at 4:30 p.m. PT. The winners of these games will compete again on Saturday under a double-elimination format.
As the No. 8 seed nationally, UCLA is in a favorable position for advancement. If they make it through next weekend, they’ll move on to the Super Regional a week later.
Fans should expect an impressive showing. This season, UCLA set an NCAA record with 182 home runs, outpacing Oklahoma, who managed 174 home runs in the Big Ten Tournament.
Grant recently set a Division I record, hitting 38 home runs this season. She has 85 career home runs and is on track to surpass Stacey Neuveman’s school record of 90.
Jordan Woolley has also made his mark with 33 home runs and a school-record 107 RBIs, while Bri Alejandre led the nation with 21 home runs, averaging 10.8 RBIs per game.
The spotlight now focuses on pitcher Taylor Tinsley as UCLA aims for its first national championship since 2019. Tinsley, who has handled more than half the team’s innings, faced challenges in the recent loss to Nebraska, despite previously shutting down both Penn State and Wisconsin.
Yet, her teammates recognize her invaluable contribution. “We all see Tinsley as a phenomenal player,” Grant noted, “and not many pitchers at UCLA can claim to have pitched this much. Everyone’s bringing their top performance, so it’s crucial for us to stay sharp.”
