PHOENIX — Dawn Staley Reflects on Championship Journey
Dawn Staley from South Carolina recalls her initial experience in a national championship game.
Back in 2017, her Gamecocks faced off against Mississippi State, a team then under the guidance of Vic Schaefer.
And yes, Staley’s squad came out on top.
This time around, she hopes UCLA doesn’t experience that kind of ‘beginner’s luck’ in the upcoming NCAA Tournament title game.
“The first time is always special,” Staley mentioned. “It’s a moment to breathe… You’re playing on the final day of college women’s basketball. Regardless of the outcome, it’s an immense honor and a significant achievement. You’re also gauging how far your program can really go.”
UCLA’s Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, and Gabriela Jaquez are back, aiming for that elusive national championship. The previous year saw the Bruins face a brutal defeat against UConn in the Final Four, but they bounced back to defeat Texas this time, a game Coach Cori Close described as “rugby.”
Still, that’s all in the past now. The focus for UCLA has to be on overcoming a gritty South Carolina team that brings a wealth of experience to the court.
Winning requires a solid 40 minutes, with minimal mistakes. Just look at how South Carolina surged at the beginning of the second half against their last opponent—turning mistakes into moments for victory.
UCLA has the personnel for that challenge. With Raven Johnson leading as a fearless captain, and Joyce Edwards known for scoring, their roster stands strong. Yet, the Bruins have their own set of talents, including six players who might find themselves drafted in the upcoming WNBA Draft.
At this pivotal point, Betts is eyeing her goals closely. She shared that Coach Close has a saying that has resonated with her throughout the season.
“She mentioned it yesterday: Rings and banners gather dust, but the memories you create…” Betts reflects.
Will those memories endure?
“Messages like that… They’re lovely, and I know I hear them often. But it’s a beautiful sentiment, coming from a good heart,” she commented.
Close has been instrumental in the players’ journeys, particularly for Betts. This is a bond that the senior center cherishes.
“She never wavered in her support of me,” Betts expressed. “Through everything we experienced, her belief pushed me daily. Even on tough days when I hesitated to listen or struggled with tough love.”
“She recognizes my potential and believes in me, even when I doubt myself. I’m grateful to have her as a mentor. She has played such a pivotal role in my life, helping me rise from darker times to where I am now. I will always appreciate her for that.”
