UConn defeats Illinois in Final Four game

University Huskies Head to National Championship Again

The University Huskies men’s basketball team will play in the national championship game for the third time in four years after defeating the Illinois Fighting Illini 71-62 in the Final Four.

The Huskies had a comfortable lead, at one point up by 14 points. However, they faced a late surge from Illinois, who went on a 10-0 run. Taris Reed Jr. managed to stop the momentum with a crucial layup and a powerful one-handed slam following a turnover.

Winning might solidify head coach Dan Hurley’s status, as this triumph means the Huskies could secure their third national title in four years, potentially placing their program in the dynasty conversation.

As the Big East champions and the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Huskies relied on the impressive performance of freshman Braylon Mullins, especially when he came through against the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight. He also made a significant impact against Illinois, scoring 12 points in the first half alone, ultimately finishing with 15.

Reed led the team with 17 points and snagged 11 rebounds, demonstrating calmness when Illinois appeared to be gaining ground. His shooting was solid, hitting 6-of-12 from the field and making all five of his free throws.

This marked a notable moment for Mullins and Reed, as their performances alleviated some pressure off Alex Karaban, who, despite only scoring nine points, contributed with four rebounds and four assists.

Illinois made a late charge, cutting the lead to just four points with 43 seconds left, but their struggle from beyond the arc was detrimental. They shot only 23% from three-point range, and this proved costly as UConn capitalized on their weaknesses.

Keaton Wagler led the Fighting Illini with 20 points, while Tomislav Ibisic added 16. Unfortunately, they were the only ones to reach double digits.

Now, the Huskies await the outcome of the Michigan and Arizona State game to determine their opponent in the national championship showdown.
