UConn graduate included in recent WNBA roster eliminations

As teams gear up for preseason games on Tuesday and Wednesday, another wave of cuts has hit the WNBA training camps. One notable departure is Christine Williams, a former teammate of the Page Bookers. Williams was drafted 14th overall by the Washington Mystics in 2022.

Sadly, she suffered an ACL tear during training camp, echoing a recent injury to Georgia Amoor. After a year of rehabilitation, Williams parted ways with the Mystics and eventually signed with the Phoenix Mercury for the remainder of the 2023 season. However, she was let go at the beginning of the 2024 training camp. This year, she entered a training camp agreement with the Minnesota Lynx but was released before their preseason game.

The Minnesota Lynx also waived Chiara Leslie. In other news from around the league, the Dallas Wings announced they had cut Aaronette Vonleh, the 31st pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. On Tuesday afternoon, the Seattle Storm reported they had released both Jordan Hobbs and Madison Connor. Hobbs was selected 34th overall, while the Storm took the 29th pick in the 2025 draft. Remaining players at Seattle’s training camp include Serena Sandel (No. 26) and Dominique Malonga (No. 2).

Expect more cuts in the coming days as teams navigate their first and second preseason games. The deadline for finalizing the opening day roster is May 15, yet many teams will make their decisions a day or two prior. This gives players a chance to be eligible for exemptions before the start of the season.

Players have the option to request an exemption 48 hours after being waived and will be compensated during that timeframe. If a player’s exemption extends into the regular season, the associated salary will count against the cap. Compensation during the season tends to be higher than that during training camp.

So far, the league has seen one player secure a position through an exemption, as Atlanta’s Dream acquired Channe Seller from the Golden State Valkyries.
