The two sons followed in the footsteps of their father, Bob Hurley, a Hall of Famer who won 26 state championships as head coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City.

Surrounded by success, Dan Hurley sometimes struggled under pressure.
“It was tough. I can’t imagine doing that on social media today,” Hurley said in an interview with Outkick. “Please don’t attack me with Dan Dakich.”.
“Back then, you had to wait for the next day’s paper to find out how bad you were at what Bob had accomplished. Thankfully for me, Bob was my best friend and always my He was my biggest supporter and always tried to lift me up and increase my confidence. We’ve always had that kind of relationship.

“You put in the exact same effort, you had the same coaches, you got the same education, you came from a family that made the exact same sacrifices, but you’re not even close to being rewarded. Back then, going was the worst. It was tough. ”
Hurley had a standout career at St. Anthony, but his struggles began at Seton Hall.
“The fans in the Northeast, New York, New Jersey and the media. When you’re not doing well, they’re hard on you. You hear that. For me, there was a huge element of self-sabotage there as well. I wanted to have that crutch.

“I drank a lot. I partied a lot. I didn’t go to the gym as much as I should have. It’s like I didn’t want to know if I was good enough. I never reached the level that Bob reached or the level of greatness. I wanted some excuse if I couldn’t reach it.
“Then you can look back and say, ‘Yeah, yeah, I drank too much and I partyed too much.'” But in a weird way, I think it helped my coaching career. Because as much as I let myself down by not being able to commit like that as a player, I’ve put too much into this part of my basketball career. ”

Hurley, a mental health awareness activist, is now turning to her faith and other resources to keep herself grounded.
“My spirituality as a Christian, faith in god We also understand that you may need to talk to a therapist, counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist about things that you may not feel comfortable talking about with your friends, wife, siblings, or parents. You need a trusted third party to help you with things that may be consuming you, or things that happened in your childhood or adulthood. ”
