Udo Kier Passes Away at 81

Udo Kier, the German-born actor, passed away this week at the age of 81. Known for his striking beauty and piercing blue eyes, he brought a haunting nobility to his roles.

Kier died early Sunday morning in Palm Springs, California, as confirmed by his partner, artist Delbert McBride. The specifics surrounding his death have not been made public.

Born as Udo Kielspe in Cologne, Germany, during the Allied bombings, Kier moved to London at 18 after meeting the renowned writer and director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. They later appeared together in films like Stationmaster’s Wife, Third Generation, and Lily Marlene.

As Variety noted, Kier’s extensive filmography includes a notable collaboration with Andy Warhol, particularly in the films Frankenstein’s Body and Blood for Dracula, both produced by Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey. These films offered a subversive, steamy twist on classic horror monsters, with Kier injecting a comical yet eerie essence into the title characters.

Kier’s relationship with acclaimed director Gus Van Sant began at the Berlin Film Festival. Van Sant helped him secure consistent roles in the United States after Kier starred in the 1991 film My Own Private Idaho alongside River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves.

Simultaneously, Kier formed a long-term collaboration with director Lars von Trier, appearing in several of his notable works from the late ’80s onwards. This includes roles in Europa, episodes of Kingdom, and films like Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac: Vol. II.

In the 1990s, Kier also gained popularity among mainstream audiences with memorable performances in titles like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Armageddon, and Blade.

I mean, Kier once expressed, “I became an actor because I liked attention,” a sentiment he shared in a 2024 interview.
