UFC Freedom 250 at the White House: A Unique Experience
It was a memorable night for UFC as they hosted a special event at the White House, marking the first rain delay in UFC history. UFC Freedom 250 took place on Sunday evening on the South Lawn, with the broadcast starting about 20 minutes late due to concerns about potential thunderstorms.
“I honestly thought they might call it off because of the rain, but thankfully, it turned out alright,” color commentator Joe Rogan said just before the event kicked off at 8:53 p.m., with the iconic White House backdrop visible.
True to its unique setting, the broadcast embraced a vibrant atmosphere right from the beginning.
President Trump and UFC CEO Dana White made their entrance from the Oval Office to the sounds of John Williams’ “Liberty Fanfare,” playfully following a “West Wing”-style path through the building. After the national colors were presented, they addressed the crowd from the lower balcony before making their way to ringside.
The Zac Brown Band performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the Blue Angels wowed the audience with an aerial display afterward, prompting around 4,300 attendees—many of them military personnel—to chant “USA.”
Fighters made their way to the Octagon, escorted by uniformed service members, with American Steve Garcia being the first to stride toward the flag-draped cage, sharing a hug with his companion.
However, as Logan noted, the weather remained a lingering issue leading up to the event.
With lightning being the potential showstopper, UFC officials expressed concerns about the weather’s impact on the timeline. Despite forecasts indicating a likelihood of thunderstorms—ranging from 50% to 100% certainty at different times—there was a palpable sense of determination.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s snowing or pouring rain; we’re going to hold this event,” White declared to the media. “Even lightning can’t stop us. Remember as kids, when lightning struck, you’d just wait it out and then jump back into the game? That’s what we’re sticking to.”
