UFL game moved to ESPN2 for NBA pregame show just before thrilling conclusion

UFL Game Interrupted for NBA Broadcast

Sporting events are buzzing with the UFL and NBA playoffs in full swing.

On Sunday, ABC made the call to cut live coverage of the United Football League (UFL) match between the Arlington Renegades and the DC Defenders. They opted instead to air a game show ahead of the NBA Western Conference semi-final game seven, featuring the Denver Nuggets and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

This change occurred right before the UFL game reached its climactic finish, leaving many viewers in the dark about how it ended.

As noted on social media, with less than two minutes remaining in the matchup, ESPN shifted the broadcast from ABC to ESPN2, opting to air the NBA pregame show twenty minutes before tipoff. It’s a common enough occurrence, though it left some viewers feeling a bit jilted.

At the moment of the interruption, the Defenders were ahead by three points, 33-30. They ultimately secured the win, with former Giants first-round pick DeAndre Baker making a crucial play by blocking a pass during the final seconds, which locked in their playoff position and knocked the Renegades out of contention.

This decision to prioritize the NBA, while not entirely shocking given the sports calendar, may have disappointed dedicated followers of spring football who missed that intense conclusion. Yet, I guess it’s just one of those things in the world of sports broadcasting.

With this victory, the Defenders improved their record to 6-2, clinching a playoff berth. It’s a notable achievement, no doubt, and adds to the excitement of the postseason.
