Mandelson Reflects on Epstein Relationship
Peter Mandelson, a prominent U.S.-UK diplomat, expressed regret over his long-standing relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. He mentioned feeling this way during a recent interview with Harry Cole from the Sun.
“I have a profound sense of sympathy for the women who suffered due to his actions and criminal acts,” Mandelson stated. He also acknowledged that he maintained a closer relationship with Epstein than he should have, admitting, “it was far too long.”
These remarks followed the Senate Oversight Committee’s investigation into Epstein’s questionable financial dealings, during which a memo known as “The Birthday Book” was released. In this book, Mandelson referred to Epstein as “the best companion,” highlighting their connection. Epstein passed away in 2019 while in a New York prison.
The book was assembled by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s confidante, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her involvement in a child sex trafficking operation linked to Epstein.
In 2019, it was revealed that Epstein had close ties with several diplomats, including Mandelson. A report from JP Morgan Chase indicated that Mandelson was scheduled to stay at Epstein’s Manhattan residence in 2009, while Epstein was serving an 18-month sentence related to allegations of procuring minors and other related offenses.
On the same day, Mandelson reflected on Epstein’s past legal troubles, noting that he had spent 13 months in a Palm Beach County jail and then a year on probation under house arrest.
“I regret falling for his false assurances regarding his legal situation,” Mandelson remarked. “Like many, I took him at his word.” He reflected, saying that, with the knowledge gained over the years, it became clear that believing him was a mistake.
Furthermore, Mandelson mentioned he hadn’t had discussions about this topic with President Trump or UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. A spokesperson for Downing Street recently conveyed confidence in their diplomats.
Mandelson admitted, “It feels like an albatross around my neck since his death.” He concluded, sharing that he regrets not only having met Epstein initially but also for continuing the connection afterward.
