UK and France Reveal Coordination on Nuclear Weapons

France and the UK have entered into a new agreement to coordinate their nuclear capabilities, marking a significant step towards enhancing security in Europe amidst rising threats.

This new nuclear arrangement was unveiled during French President Macron’s visit to London. Both nations emphasize that while a nuclear threat to one could impact the other, working together will bolster the safety of the “Euro-Atlantic Region.”

According to the agreement, each country’s nuclear deterrents remain distinct yet will undergo some changes. The British government pointed out that “an adversary threatening the vital interests of either nation could face the combined strength of both nuclear forces.”

In a public statement, London remarked, “Our nuclear arms are meant to counter the most severe threats to our national security and essential interests. While our nuclear forces operate independently, they can play a vital role in enhancing the security of the Alliance and maintaining peace in the Euro-Atlantic area.”

To promote this collaboration, a “British-French nuclear steering group” will be formed. This group will oversee coordination on nuclear policies, capabilities, and operations.

This announcement is significant in terms of its possible effects on France’s nuclear strategy. The UK collaborates with the US on nuclear matters as part of NATO, and is set to engage in a nuclear-sharing initiative involving American warheads on British aircraft. In contrast, France maintains a fiercely independent nuclear deterrent. Unlike the UK, all French nuclear weapons and launch systems are developed domestically, though some American technical support has been provided.

A war research professor at King’s College London, Sir Lawrence Friedman, remarked on the importance of this development. He stated that France had never publicly acknowledged joint nuclear capability adjustments before. He suggested that even minor areas of collaboration, such as synchronizing the refurbishment of nuclear submarines, could prevent potential gaps in capacity.

Compared to the US and Russia, France and the UK possess smaller but still significant nuclear arsenals. They are the only independent nuclear forces in Western Europe, while other nations host American nuclear weapons.

The UK is in the process of replacing its fleet of submarines that carry nuclear missiles, with the construction of a new class having started earlier this year.

This nuclear agreement is just one of several military collaborations established this week between the UK and France. They also reached an agreement regarding future peacekeeping missions in Ukraine. Reports indicate that the two nations will collaborate to monitor Ukrainian airspace in an effort to prevent further Russian invasions. However, it’s noted that even with joint military presence, the nuclear umbrella will not extend to Ukraine.
