UK Government Prohibits Pro-UK Orange Order Parade in Northern Ireland

LONDON (AP) – Controversial March Banned in Northern Ireland

The British government has decided to prohibit a divisive march in Northern Ireland after a two-week standoff involving groups that advocate for the region’s ongoing union with the United Kingdom and those supporting its reunification with the Republic of Ireland.

Chris Bryant, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, took action on Friday night, stating that there was no feasible compromise between the union-supporting Orange Order and the residents of the area known for its republican sentiments where the march was to occur on Garvaghy Road in Portadown.

“I’ve determined that allowing this to go ahead is not in the public interest, so I’ve banned the procession,” Bryant announced.

The standoff stemmed from traditional summer marches organized by unionist groups, celebrating their Protestant heritage and historical connections to the U.K. These events have historically increased tensions with the predominantly Catholic republican community, which perceives them as deliberately provocative and a source of conflict.

Tensions escalated again this year following a court decision that appeared to permit the Orange Order to march on Garvaghy Road for the first time in nearly three decades. This road has been a significant point of contention between republican and unionist groups, especially before the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which largely curtailed the violence known as the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

When members of the Orange Order attempted to march on September 27, they were met with resistance from republican protesters, including First Minister Michelle O’Neill, who heads Northern Ireland’s regional government.

Since that day, the two factions have remained at an impasse, raising alarm that the situation could spark a wider conflict in Northern Ireland.

Bryant mentioned that he engaged in discussions with both the residents along Garvaghy Road and the Orange Order, but was unable to broker a solution.

“I have listened to the concerns from all parties and regret that we could not find a way forward. Many residents in Portadown have been feeling anxious and worried,” he expressed. “With that in mind, I urge everyone to halt any protests, rallies, or demonstrations. We need to avoid escalating tensions further.”
