UK MP Says Grey Squirrels Are “Hamas Of The Squirrel World”

Hamas was responsible for the deadly attack on Israel on October 7th.

DUP MP Jim Shannon described gray squirrels as the “Hamas of squirrels” during a debate in Parliament on Tuesday, November 28. Mr Shannon was speaking during a debate on gray squirrel population management. .

He said: “The Ards Red Squirrel Group is full of wonderful volunteers who are working tirelessly to protect the future of red squirrels in my constituency of Strangford, and particularly in Mt Stewart.

“The organization is led by the National Trust’s Mt Stewart Ranger Team, who are in constant contact with local landowners to monitor red squirrels and eradicate invasive gray squirrels.

“Certainly, the problem is the very existence of gray squirrels. Gray squirrels are the Hamas of the squirrel world,” the lawmaker said.

The MP went on to say that “greater integration” was needed between the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and local red squirrel groups in the devolved bodies, “to conserve and expand the red squirrel species across the country. He proposed that it is necessary to secure the necessary means to Northern Ireland”.

The Independent reported that North American gray squirrels were introduced to Britain in the 1800s and are a major threat to the native red squirrel population.

Meanwhile, more hostages were freed from Gaza on Wednesday as mediators scrambled to broker another extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas hours before it expired.
