Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, a British university has removed the term “Anglo-Saxon” from its curriculum.
The University of Nottingham has removed “Argo-Saxon” from its history and literature courses to counter “nationalist narratives”.
According to TelegraphThe MA course 'Viking and Anglo-Saxon Studies' has been renamed 'Viking and Early Medieval English Studies'.
Another module, a literature course, was originally called “A Tale of the Seven Kingdoms: Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age England from Bede to Alfred the Great” but has been retitled “Early Medieval England from Bede to Alfred the Great.”
Plans to “decolonise the curriculum”, promised by the university in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement, have a central focus on attacking British history and identity, but the university will also reportedly aim to “problematise the term 'Viking'”.

The Nottingham University scholars have also sought to deconstruct “essentialist ideas” about nationality – the very notion of a distinctively British identity with distinctive, fundamental characteristics.
It is not the only university attacking the history of the Anglo-Saxons: Cambridge University now teaches students that the Anglo-Saxons never actually existed as a distinct people.
Ironically, the move by the School of Anglo-Saxon, Norwegian and Celtic Studies (ASNC), which represents the University of Cambridge, was reportedly undertaken to promote “anti-racism” ideas.
“One concern is to address recent concerns about the use of the term 'Anglo-Saxon' and its perception as being associated with British ethnic and racial identity,” the ministry was reported as saying.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Cambridge University Press published Anglo-Saxon England Journal, said The institute plans to drop the Anglo-Saxon word from its name to better reflect “the international, interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving nature of research in this field”.
