Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Talks with Global Leaders
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently engaged in discussions with President Donald Trump, as well as leaders from Germany, Britain, and Poland, following peace talks with Russia that took place on Friday.
This marked the first meeting between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Turkey in three years, coinciding with Trump’s apparent push for both parties to bring an end to the ongoing conflict swiftly.
“I spoke with you [the President of the United States], along with President Macron, Prime Minister Merz, and others,” Zelensky stated in a post on X. “We discussed the Istanbul meeting.”
There’s a sense of urgency here. Trump has indicated a desire to meet with Putin soon, even after previous peace talks fell through. “Ukraine is prepared to take all necessary steps for genuine peace, and it’s crucial that the world maintains a strong stance,” he emphasized. “If the Russians refuse to accept a complete and unconditional ceasefire, then significant sanctions should remain in effect.”
Zelensky continued by insisting, “Pressure on Russia must persist until they’re ready to end the war. I extend my gratitude to everyone worldwide for their support.”
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this sentiment, criticizing Moscow’s refusal to acknowledge ceasefire proposals supported by the U.S., Ukraine, and European nations. He remarked, “This refusal indicates that Russia is not interested in peace; rather, it seems intent on prolonging the conflict.” Macron urged allied nations to formulate a consistent response.
Interestingly, Trump has remained silent regarding his Friday comments or conversations with other world leaders, and efforts to reach the White House for clarification were unsuccessful.
Moreover, there are doubts being raised about the effectiveness of the ongoing negotiations, with Senator Marco Rubio expressing skepticism about whether anything productive would come from them. Regardless, Trump maintains that direct discussions with Putin are essential for progress. On Friday, he stated, “We need to meet. I believe together we can find a resolution. Well, maybe not, but at least we’ll have clarity.”
As of now, it is unclear what Trump plans to do if Putin rejects the idea of negotiation or does not agree to an end to hostilities.
While Zelensky had previously accepted Putin’s proposal for talks, he recently suggested that leaders from both nations should directly participate in negotiations. However, a last-minute announcement from the Kremlin confirmed that not only would Putin not attend, but the delegation from Russia would also not be headed by senior officials.
This has raised questions about the actual meeting and whether it will take place, especially considering that neither Zelensky nor Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned attending the discussions that were rescheduled for Friday.
