Ukraine Enhances Maritime Drone Capabilities

KYIV, Ukraine – Ukraine’s State Security Service has introduced an upgraded maritime drone, claiming it can now navigate the entire Black Sea, carry heavier armaments, and utilize artificial intelligence for targeting purposes.

The unmanned naval drones have already been deployed to strike Russian vessels and infrastructure in the Black Sea. The Security Service of Ukraine, referred to as SBU, noted that the operations of a drone known as a “Sea Baby” forced changes in Russia’s naval strategies.

According to SBU, the Sea Baby now boasts a range that has been extended from 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) to 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) and can handle a payload of up to 2,000 kilograms (around 4,400 pounds).

A demonstration attended by reporters from the Associated Press showcased various models, including those equipped with multiple rocket launchers and stabilized machine gun turrets.

SBU Brigadier General Ivan Lukashevich emphasized that the drone would also feature an AI-assisted targeting system for both offensive and defensive purposes. It will have the capability to deploy small air attack drones and multiple suicide bomb systems to prevent seizures.

The SBU reported that drone strikes have effectively targeted 11 Russian vessels, leading the Russian Navy to relocate its primary base from Sevastopol, located in Crimea, to Novorossiysk on Russia’s Black Sea coast.

Lukashevich remarked that the SBU has pioneered this new form of naval warfare, asserting that the Sea Baby has transformed from a one-time-use attack craft into a versatile, reusable platform that broadens Ukraine’s operational capabilities.

For security reasons, authorities requested that details regarding the timing and location of the demonstration remain confidential.

The drone is operated remotely from a mobile control center located in a van, with operators managing a series of screens and controls.

“Crew unity is probably the most important thing. We’re always focused on that,” said one operator, who went by the call sign “Scout” in accordance with military protocols.

The SBU noted that maritime drones have also contributed to several notable attacks, including repeated strikes on Crimean bridges, as well as targeting underwater support supplies to disrupt heavy military transportation.

The Sea Baby program is partly supported by public donations through state initiatives and is coordinated with Ukraine’s military and political leaders.

Lukashevich added that the upgrade from disposable attack drones to reusable, networked units signifies a significant breakthrough in asymmetric naval warfare. He stated, “With this new product, we have equipped it with a rocket weapon that can operate from long distances, beyond enemy reach. This platform is capable of delivering heavy weapons,” concluding that it illustrates how effectively Ukrainian donations can be utilized for defense initiatives.
