Ukraine Launches Dozens of Drone Attacks on Russian Mainland

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — More than 30 drones were shot down in the country’s west late Sunday night and into the night, Russian authorities said, just hours after a Russian bomb attack on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, killed three people and sent dozens to hospital.

Officials said one of four airstrikes hit a five-story residential building on Saturday afternoon. Regional Governor Ole Shnievbov said 41 wounded were still being treated.

In a video address after the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Ukraine’s partners to strengthen their air defenses.

“For Ukraine, we really need modern air defense systems like Patriot, accelerated training of F-16 fighter pilots, and most importantly, sufficient range of our weapons,” he said.

Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oreshchuk said two Russian missiles were shot down over the Kiev region last night, with falling shrapnel injuring two people.

Russian air defenses shot down 33 Ukrainian drones over the Bryansk, Smolensk, Lipetsk and Tula regions in the country’s western region, the Russian Defense Ministry said. No casualties or damage were reported.

Vadim Filashkin, governor of Ukraine’s partially occupied Donetsk region, said two people were killed and four wounded in Saturday’s Russian attack.
