Ukraine has called on its citizens to leave the city of Kherson following a Russian attack on the city.
Kyiv:
Ukrainian authorities on Thursday ordered the evacuation of civilians from the southern Kherson region, which is partly under Russian military control and regularly comes under shelling.
Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram: “The Kherson Region Defense and Legal Affairs Agency has decided to forcibly evacuate families with children from the region, which is under constant enemy shelling.”
Russian forces have taken control of areas in the Kherson region south of the Dnieper River after withdrawing last year from the region’s capital, Kherson city, which they regularly bombard.
Ukrainian authorities had already recommended in August that civilians leave more than a dozen areas northeast of Kharkiv in case of a Russian attack, but these evacuations were not mandatory.
Prokudin also said local authorities were preparing for an “emergency situation” over power supplies this fall and winter.
In the winter of 2022, Russia carried out a campaign to bomb Ukraine’s infrastructure, resulting in periodic power outages.
