Ukraine peace agreement must guarantee there will be no 'another war in the future': Rubio

Negotiations for Peace in Ukraine Intensify

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized recently that any peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine must ensure “no war ever again.” This statement came as key negotiators from Washington and Kiev convened in Miami on Sunday.

The meeting was timed just before Trump’s special envoy headed to Moscow to present the latest proposal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The objective is to reconcile the issues surrounding what territory Ukraine might concede and what security assurances it would receive in exchange, both of which remained unresolved during last week’s discussions in Geneva.

“This isn’t just about stopping the war; it’s about establishing a framework that allows both nations to be independent and secure, preventing future conflicts,” Rubio articulated as the meeting commenced.

His remarks follow criticism regarding a 28-point peace plan that many believe favors Russia, leaving Ukraine exposed to potential future attacks. The more recent 19-point proposal has been accepted by Ukraine but is expected to be dismissed by the Kremlin.

This gathering occurred just days after the resignation of Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s chief negotiator and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, following an incident involving an attack on his residence. Yermak has reportedly become the focus of an investigation concerning alleged corruption tied to contracts at Energoatom, Ukraine’s largest electricity provider.

Ukraine’s National Security Adviser, Rustem Umerov, is currently spearheading peace negotiations. He remarked, “I’m in continuous contact with the President of Ukraine. We have clear goals: to advocate for Ukraine’s interests, foster meaningful dialogue, and advance the progress made in Geneva,” he shared on social media after the talks kicked off.

“We’re dedicated to achieving lasting peace and robust security for Ukraine.”

Trump’s team for these crucial discussions included Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. The setting for the meeting was billionaire Witkoff’s Shelvey Golf Club.

Both U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators are reviewing the initial 28-point framework proposed by Trump’s team earlier this month. President Zelenskyy commented, “The American side has approached this constructively, and it seems feasible to implement measures in the coming days aimed at ending the war with dignity.”

On Tuesday, Witkoff and Kushner are expected to share their revised peace plan with Putin, who recently stated that Russia would obtain territory either peacefully or by force. Trump also expressed on social media that he anticipates meeting both Zelenskyy and Putin soon, but only once an agreement to conclude the war is in its final stages.
