Ukraine strikes Russian submarine using underwater drone in Novorossiysk port

On Monday, Ukraine reported a significant underwater drone strike that resulted in substantial damage to a Russian Kilo-class submarine docked at Novorossiysk port. This marks a notable first in this type of attack.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) revealed that the operation utilized the “Subsea Baby” underwater drone, targeting a submarine that has four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles. These missiles are known for their role in targeting various locations in Ukraine, including Kiev.

This operation was executed in coordination with the Ukrainian Navy and the SBU’s 13th Military Counterintelligence Directorate. A video shared by the SBU depicted the naval base at Novorossiysk, situated in Russia’s Krasnodar region, just moments before a massive explosion took place.

An expert commented on the innovation of underwater drones, suggesting that they represent a new phase in drone warfare, showcasing how smaller entities can leverage technology against more formidable opponents.

As Ukraine intensifies its military actions, particularly in Sevastopol and around other occupied Crimean ports, the naval base has transformed into a significant stronghold for the Russian fleet. It was reported that the submarine remained at Novorossiysk due to disruptions caused by other Ukrainian operations, such as the deployment of SeaBaby surface drones that compelled Russia’s Black Sea Fleet to evacuate Sevastopol Bay.

In response, a spokesperson for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet dismissed claims of any damage, asserting that both submarines and crew were unharmed.

In the broader picture, this submarine attack occurs amid ongoing extensive drone and missile offensives by Russia against Ukraine. The United States continues its efforts to facilitate an end to the conflict initiated by President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently engaged with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, in Berlin to discuss security matters pertinent to Ukraine’s future. Zelensky also consulted with European leaders earlier in the week regarding a comprehensive political framework aimed at ending the war and ensuring Ukraine’s long-term stability and recovery post-conflict.
