Ukraine’s Major Strike on Russian Infrastructure

Recently, Russian officials reported a significant attack on industrial sites in the Samara region of southwestern Russia, carried out by Ukraine.

Ivan Noskov, the head of Samara, noted that the air defense forces successfully intercepted a “massive” missile strike that resulted in “localized damage” to the city’s industrial sector. He mentioned that medical aid was provided to those injured, although details were sparse.

As Ukraine enters its fifth year of conflict, there’s been an uptick in long-range airstrikes targeting Russia’s military and energy infrastructures. The goal seems to be to diminish Russia’s war funding and, perhaps, to make the Russian population more aware of the invasion’s impact.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared on social media that Ukrainian forces targeted the Progress Center in Samara, a facility connected to the Russian space agency Roscosmos, which works on rocket technology and electronics. He claimed that Ukrainian-made Flamingo missiles were involved, despite the attack taking place approximately 900 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Furthermore, President Zelenskyy indicated that the Savasleika air base in Russia, situated about 700 kilometers from the front lines, was also struck.

“We need peace, and this should be evident in Russia, shown through tangible damage to specific facilities,” Zelenskyy stated.

Interestingly, while most attacks in Ukraine are typically under 200 kilometers in range, there’s been a notable rise in long-range operations this year. Data from the independent conflict monitor ACLED revealed that strikes in July were three times more numerous than those in January. This heightened activity has forced Russia to broaden its air defense coverage across a larger area.

On the same day, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced that they had shot down 598 Ukrainian drones across 19 regions, including the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and Crimea, which has been annexed by Russia.

In a separate incident, a Ukrainian drone struck a home in the town of Shatula near Moscow, injuring two individuals, one of whom was a nine-year-old child, according to local governor Andrei Vorobyov.

In another location, a tragic event unfolded when a Russian attack on an apartment building in southeastern Ukraine resulted in the death of a three-month-old infant and injuries to eleven others, local officials reported.

Oleksandr Hanza, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Directorate, mentioned that a drone hit a structure in the town of Markhanets. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense indicated that it targeted warehouses and infrastructure in various Ukrainian ports, including Odessa, Izmail, and Yuzhny.

According to Ukraine’s air force, on this same day, Russia launched 152 drones over Ukraine, of which 124 were destroyed.
