Ukraine war briefing: Russian shelling kills three in Kherson region as road crash in west leaves 14 dead | Ukraine

  • Russian artillery fire killed three civilians in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region on Saturday. Prosecutors said two bodies were found in the rubble of a house after morning shelling in a village near Berislav, north of the city of Kherson. Kherson region governor Oleksandr Prokudin said one person was killed in an evening shelling in a village south of the town.

  • An overnight Russian attack left more than 100,000 homes in northern Ukraine without power and cut off water supplies to regional capitals.Ukrainian authorities announced Saturday. The northern Sumy region, which borders Russia, was plunged into darkness after a Russian attack late Friday destroyed energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said. Hours later, Ukrainian state television reported that Russian drones had struck the regional capital called Sumy, hitting a power line that supplies water to a pumping system, cutting off water. Russia’s state news agency RIA cited a local pro-Kremlin “underground” leader as saying Moscow’s forces had struck a rocket-propelled grenade manufacturing plant in the city. The claim could not be independently verified.

  • Fire breaks out on gas pipeline in CrimeaRussian authorities said on Sunday that the incident was accidental and no casualties were reported. Online videos showed what appeared to be one or more explosions in the Alushta region, followed by a large fire.

  • Russian air defenses shot down seven Ukrainian drones in southern Belgorod and Kursk regions. Officials and the military said seven drones were shot down over the Ukrainian border on Saturday. The Russian Defense Ministry said the seven drones were intercepted over Belgorod Oblast, an area where Ukrainian attacks take place almost daily. Alexei Smirnov, governor of Kursk Oblast, located to the northwest, also reported seven drones were shot down over his region. He said Ukrainian forces had shelled about 10 villages in one day.

  • The Ukrainian air force commander said his forces had tricked the Russians into deploying missiles against more advanced models. The mock-ups were set up to look like military targets. Mykola Oreshchuk said in a Telegram post that they were meant to represent fighter jets and surface-to-air missile batteries. They were set up at an airfield near the central city of Krivi Rih and in the Black Sea port city of Odesa. Attached to Saturday’s post was a video purportedly from a Russian spy drone, which Oreshchuk said showed a Russian Iskander missile attacking the mock-ups. “Air Force personnel took passive defensive measures!” he wrote.

  • In the frontline region of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, Russian artillery fire killed 11 civilians and wounded 43. Regional governor Vadim Filashkin said five people were killed overnight between Friday and Saturday. Five more were killed in the town of Seridove, southeast of the eastern city of Pokrovsk, which has emerged as a hotspot on the front line. The Ukrainian General Staff said Saturday morning that Ukrainian and Russian forces had clashed 45 times near Pokrovsk the previous day.   • Fourteen people were killed when an oil truck collided with a minibus in western Ukraine on Saturday.Rescue services said one person was killed, including a six-year-old child, and one survivor. The Telegram report included a photo of a vehicle overturned in a cornfield in the Rivne region. The survivor was reported to be in critical condition and was being treated for injuries.

  • Japan has announced a joint project with Cambodia to share knowledge and technology on mine clearance with countries around the world, including Ukraine.Under the Japan-Cambodia Mine Action Initiative, “Japan will provide full support to humanitarian mine action in Ukraine,” Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said in Phnom Penh. “Next week we will provide Ukraine with a large mine-clearing machine, and next month we will train Ukrainian personnel here in Cambodia how to operate the machine.”
