Ukraine war update: Next destination Istanbul after Trump disrupts ceasefire plans

  • Donald Trump has put forward a proposal suggesting that he could travel from the Middle East to Türkiye to take part in potential peace discussions between Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to travel to Istanbul and is challenging Vladimir Putin to a meeting. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry has not clarified whether Putin would agree to this.

  • Patrick Wintour notes that Trump’s recent involvement may backtrack current European strategies aimed at rapidly increasing sanctions against Russia. This comes as Putin has declined the longstanding US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. Recently, leaders from Britain, France, Germany, and Poland emphasized the importance of visiting Kiev for the first time over the weekend. They indicated that the ceasefire should commence on Monday.

  • Trump maintained that rather than pushing for an immediate ceasefire—asserting that “Russian President Putin doesn’t want it”—Russia and Ukraine should convene “quickly” for discussions. His statement suggested that at the very least, this could help assess whether a deal is plausible, allowing European leaders and the US to determine their next steps.

  • While further measures had been anticipated to be announced on Monday, the UK has postponed these. Meanwhile, the EU is still preparing another round of sanctions to be introduced later this month. A spokesperson for the German government indicated that the EU would initiate work on sanctions if no ceasefire occurs by day’s end. The supplementary US actions were seen as potentially transformative, with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham drafting a sanctions proposal that has broad support in Congress.

  • Over 100 Sharp and Decoy Drones were launched in Ukraine during a nighttime assault, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, as the Kremlin effectively dismissed the 30-day ceasefire. The Ukrainian military reported clashes with Russian forces along the frontline starting from midnight, coinciding with when the ceasefire was intended to go into effect.

  • Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Silsky remarked that the most intense battles remain focused on the Donetsk region, which is central to the Eastern Front and near the Kursk region of Russia, nearly nine months after the invasion began. Ukrainian foreign minister Andry Sibiga noted that Russia “completely ignored” the ceasefire request and continued to attack the front lines.

  • The United Nations Air Council determined that Russia was responsible for the downing of Malaysian passenger flight MH17 in the Donetsk area. This incident occurred shortly after Russia commenced its conflict with Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 298 individuals on July 17, 2014. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council will be considering the type of compensation to be provided, as explained by both the Dutch and Australian governments.

  • Ukrainian and Polish officials reported that Polish protestors have resumed blocking one of the significant border crossings. This serves as a reminder of the protests in 2023 against perceived unfair competition from Ukrainian agricultural imports and transport firms. These earlier protests started when the EU relaxed restrictions on Ukrainian haulers operating at borders in light of the Russian invasion.
