Ukrainian Drone Attack Causes Fires at Russian Black Sea Harbor

Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Russian Black Sea Port

(AP) – A drone strike from Ukraine sparked a fire at one of Russia’s Black Sea ports, officials reported on Sunday, coinciding with upcoming negotiations aimed at resolving a nearly four-year conflict.

The Taman port, located in the Krasnodar region, suffered damage to oil storage tanks, warehouses, and terminals, with two individuals reported injured, as stated by regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev.

Meanwhile, in the Odesa region of Ukraine, debris from a Russian drone caused damage to civilian and transport infrastructure, disrupting power and water services, according to officials.

Ukraine’s ongoing drone attacks on Russian energy sites are intended to cut off the oil export revenues that Russia relies on for its military operations. In response, Russia is targeting Ukraine’s power grid in an effort to deprive civilians of essential services, a strategy that officials in Kyiv describe as an attempt to “weaponize winter.”

This incident occurred just before U.S.-mediated discussions between Russian and Ukrainian representatives set to take place in Geneva on Tuesday and Wednesday, marking almost four years since Russia’s significant invasion began on February 22.

During the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy raised concerns regarding his country’s security going forward. He touched on the U.S. proposal for a free trade zone in the Donbass region, questioning how it would be effective if, as Russia suggests, Ukraine must withdraw for peace.

Zelensky remarked on the urgency expressed by American officials for a swift resolution while emphasizing Ukraine’s desire for security guarantees to be prioritized in any agreements.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a ranking member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, echoed President Zelensky’s apprehensions. She stated that without genuine security, any peace deal would only lead to more conflict, noting that Russia’s ambitions extend beyond just Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Kaja Karas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, observed that Russia appears to seek diplomatic gains where its military efforts have faltered, anticipating concessions from the U.S. during negotiations. However, she pointed out that key demands from Russia, such as lifting sanctions, ultimately require decisions from European authorities.

“A sustainable peace will necessitate some concessions from the Russian side as well,” she affirmed.

Previous U.S.-led initiatives aimed at reaching an agreement to conclude the war have struggled to tackle persistent issues, particularly concerning the fate of Ukraine’s Donbas industrial area, where Russian forces maintain occupation.
