Ukrainian anti-ship missiles and drones have targeted a significant Russian naval facility situated along the Black Sea coast, describing the operation as “unprecedented,” according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday.
Since the onset of the Russian invasion over four years ago, Ukraine has repeatedly utilized advanced drones to strike Russian maritime assets, including both military vessels and oil tankers. It’s interesting—given that both nations share coastlines on the Black Sea.
Officials in Kiev have pointed out that the deployment of unmanned drones has become one of Ukraine’s most notable advancements during the conflict, effectively hindering the movements of Russia’s once-powerful naval presence in the region.
Nevertheless, Ukrainian leaders suspect that President Putin is determined to continue the conflict, despite the slow and brutal reality of advancing his larger troop forces on the battlefield, alongside U.S. diplomatic attempts at resolution.
Zelenskyy mentioned on social media late Tuesday that intelligence reports suggest Putin intends to “rapidly recruit hundreds of thousands more Russians before the year ends.”
Ukraine Reports Damage to Black Sea Port Facilities
In a social media update on Wednesday, Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian military executed an operation aimed at the naval base in Novorossiysk, which is the last significant stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.
He indicated that the strike affected air defense systems, piers, and various port facilities across cities in the Krasnodar region.
The governor of Krasnodar, Veniamin Kondratyev, reported that hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Novorossiysk, along with places like Anapa, Gelendzhik, and the Temryuk district overnight.
The Russian Ministry of Defense responded by claiming that their air defense forces had downed over 500 Ukrainian drones during the operation.
Kondratyev also disclosed that an eight-year-old in Novorossiysk lost their life due to the assault, and another individual succumbed to injuries from an attack in the Temryuk region. Additionally, reporting indicated injuries to twelve other individuals.
Kondratyev noted that debris from downed drones fell on the premises of four factories and affected 21 residential buildings, although further details regarding the damage remain vague.
Novorossiysk is significant as it houses a critical international oil terminal.
The Grushovaya oil facility near Novorossiysk stands as one of the largest transshipment hubs in southern Russia for oil and petroleum products.
Last February, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns regarding Ukraine’s attacks on Novorossiysk, indicating potential impacts on U.S. oil interests linked to Kazakhstan.
The Caspian Sea Pipeline Consortium operates a pipeline that runs from Kazakhstan to Novorossiysk and plays a major role in the export of crude oil from key Kazakh oil fields owned by American companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil.
In Crimea, Russian officials announced that they had downed 115 Ukrainian military drones over Sevastopol, claiming damage to ten apartment buildings and 25 private homes.
Russian Drone Attack Results in Casualties and Damage
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 138 long-range drones, in addition to missiles, targeting various locations in Ukraine during the night.
This resulted in damage across 16 areas throughout the country.
A substantial attack in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region led to the death of two individuals and injuries to two others, as per regional chief Oleksandr Prokudin on Wednesday.
The offensive also resulted in the destruction of a shopping mall located in Zaporizhzhya, authorities confirmed.
