Uma Thurman Reflects on Career Choices
Uma Thurman has navigated her successful career in film without firmly planting herself in Hollywood, sharing insights in a recent interview. Interestingly, she feels that by not moving to Los Angeles, she might have missed forging a deeper bond with the industry.
While she solidified her reputation as a top actress and action star through roles like in “Kill Bill,” Thurman has chosen to remain in New York. “I always thought I should have moved to Los Angeles,” she revealed during the interview.
There were moments when the thought of relocating to California crossed her mind, especially as her Hollywood career progressed.
In a related note, Ali Larter announced that she and her husband are leaving Los Angeles to focus more on their children in Idaho.
Thurman mentioned, “I worked there so often that I even managed to get an apartment at some point. As soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within about six weeks.” Instead of heading to Hollywood, she prioritized family over geographic advantages.
Yet, she acknowledged that this choice had its drawbacks. “I’ve never lived in Los Angeles, and because of that I haven’t been able to integrate into my professional community, which I think is such a shame,” she added.
Rather than networking in Hollywood, she found community closer to home among other parents. “We had more community with other moms at the 16th Street and Rutherford Place pick-ups, which is fine. But I wish we had that chapter. I think I would have really liked it,” she noted.
Despite recognizing what she might have missed, Thurman insists she’s not focused on what could have been.
She also reflected on the importance of happiness regardless of circumstances, stating, “I think the choice to be happy should be made no matter the circumstances.” Thurman’s previous marriage to Ethan Hawke, whom she met while filming “Gattaca,” adds context to her perspective on relationships and family.
Thurman filed for divorce in 2004 after several years apart; they married in 1998 and finalized their divorce in 2005. They share two children, Maya and Levon. Both have moved on since then, with Hawke marrying Ryan Shawhughes in 2008, while Thurman had a relationship with Arpad Busson, which included an engagement that ultimately ended in 2014. Their daughter, Luna, was born in 2012.
