UMass Dartmouth athlete Flordan Bazile found dead in river after apparent suicide

The search for a missing Dartmouth College track and field athlete in Massachusetts ended tragically after police recovered his body in a river, school officials announced in an email to students.

Flordan “Flo” Basil, 21, was found in a Massachusetts river Tuesday night after an extensive water and ground search. NBC10 reported.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office told the outlet there was no suspicion of foul play and Bazile's death was considered a suicide.

Basil, a second-year student, was last seen around 2 a.m. Monday in his dormitory at Pine Dale Hall on the main campus of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth police searched the entire Fairhaven area for more than a day before finally finding Basile's body in the Acushnet River, about 11 miles from the dorm.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Flordan “Flo” Basil, an undergraduate student at the Charlton College of Business, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth President Mark Fuller said in a statement.

“In the coming days, we will be sharing information with students, staff and faculty about our plans to honor Flo’s memory and celebrate his life on campus,” Professor Fuller said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Flo's family, friends, teammates and classmates at this very sad time.”

Basil, a sprinter, holds the school record for the 100-meter dash; 2024 Little East Conference Track Athlete and Track Rookie Athlete of the Week for the past two weeks, according to Dartmouth Athletics, Massachusetts.

The Orlando native, who later attended high school in Massachusetts, was also named the Little East Conference Rookie Track Athlete of the Year in 2022.

Fuller said his coaches and teammates described Basil as “hard-working, energetic, a champion and a great friend.”

Basil is part of the school's Charlton College of Business program and is listed as an ACSB accredited institution among many prestigious business schools nationwide.
