UN Reports Myanmar Military Launched Wave of Attacks in Wake of Earthquake

Geneva:

The military in Myanmar has reportedly launched numerous attacks following a devastating earthquake that hit the nation.

The severe and complex conflict has embroiled Myanmar since 2021, when the military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi.

Despite last Friday’s tremor that resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 individuals, and amid ongoing reports of sporadic violence, the junta allied with its opponents on Wednesday, briefly halting hostilities to facilitate relief efforts.

Nevertheless, the United Nations Office of Rights has documented more than 60 military attacks since the earthquake occurred.

“There are 16 reports of active airstrikes in several regions of the country, including those impacted by the earthquake. The ceasefire officially began on April 2,” stated Myanmar team chief James Rodehaver during a press conference in Geneva, speaking from Bangkok.

Just moments earlier, rights office spokesperson Rabina Shamdasani informed reporters that 14 attacks had been reported, but Rodehaver noted that the office had received “two additional attack reports” since the briefing started.

Meanwhile, UN Rights Chief Volker Turk emphasized in a statement that the declared ceasefire must ensure immediate and unrestricted access for rescuers and humanitarian workers to all individuals in need.

“I urge all military operations to cease, and to prioritize support for those impacted by the earthquake, while ensuring unimpeded access for humanitarian organizations ready to assist,” he added.

“We hope that this tragic event will serve as a pivotal moment in the country towards achieving an inclusive political resolution.”
