Fatal Wrong-Way Crash in Tennessee Leads to Charges Against Suspect
A tragic wrong-way collision on a highway in Tennessee has resulted in vehicular homicide charges against a suspect described as an illegal immigrant. Currently, he is in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), based on jail records.
The individual, 27-year-old Eric Ramon Alcantara-Guevara, faces several charges including vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a fatality. This incident occurred on Interstate 640 West in Knoxville on Sunday night.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers were called to the scene around 7:15 p.m. following reports of a crash involving a motorcycle and a car traveling the wrong way near the Broadway exit. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist did not survive the incident, and his identity has not been disclosed pending notification of family.
Police reported that the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene before authorities arrived. However, within a short time, Alcantara-Guevara was located and arrested. Investigators indicated he initially attempted to escape but was apprehended quickly.
On January 19, multiple warrants were issued for Alcantara-Guevara, including a pretrial bond of $125,000 for the vehicular homicide charge. Records also show that ICE issued a hold on him, suggesting federal authorities suspect he may be in the U.S. illegally.
Alcantara-Guevara appeared in court on January 20 for mandatory bail hearings, with another court date scheduled for February 26, according to court documents. The police investigation into the fatal crash remains active.
As of now, ICE has not publicly confirmed Alcantara-Guevara’s immigration status or whether they had previous interactions with him before his arrest.
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) has expressed strong sentiments regarding the situation, advocating for severe penalties and expulsion. She stated, “Eric Ramon Alcantara-Guevara should face the full wrath of the American judiciary and be deported. The Knoxville community is safer because law enforcement officials apprehended this man after he allegedly caused a motorcyclist’s death and fled.”
