Unauthorized Tennis Journalist Attempts to Disrupt Australian Open with Anti-American Queries

Press Conference Controversy at Australian Open

It’s hard to believe, but some reporters seem to have lost the plot entirely.

During a recent post-match press conference at the Australian Open, questions took a surprising turn. A reporter directed inquiries to Coco Gauff about President Donald Trump and the political climate in the U.S. Gauff candidly expressed her fatigue with such topics, clearly wanting to move on.

The same journalist later posed similar questions to other American tennis players, including Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul. Their responses haven’t been reported yet. (Related: Amanda Anisimova shuts down a reporter asking her to criticize America)

When Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz faced similar questions, they appeared uncomfortable. In contrast, Jessica Pegula took a more measured approach. Madison Keys even seized an opportunity to slip in a politically charged comment.

Some speculate that these reporters are simply misguided. One in particular, who goes by Owen Lewis, has made a name for himself on a platform called Bluesky, where he claims affiliation with The Athletic.

While athletes should be focused on their competitive performances, it seems that someone in the press room prefers to stir the pot with loaded questions instead.

Here’s a few key points for Lewis and others to consider:

  • Tennis tends to lean conservative. It’s grounded in personal responsibility and strict adherence to rules.
  • Fans are there for the tennis. People pay to watch matches, not to hear political commentary from young athletes.
  • This approach lacks professionalism. Bombarding athletes with politically charged questions feels more like a stunt than journalism.

While Keys may have played into Lewis’s narrative, the majority of American players simply want to focus on tennis. With the tournament still underway, it feels as if this reporter is overshadowing the athletes’ moments in the spotlight.

If Lewis really wants to be an activist, perhaps he should consider a different platform, one more suited to political commentary. If the intention is to be a sports journalist, then it’s time to act accordingly.

The organizers of the Australian Open need to take action. This isn’t just a minor annoyance; it’s behavior that undermines the professional integrity of the press conference space. Revoking this reporter’s access could help restore focus back to the game.
