UNC brings on a third quarterback following a disappointing 2025 season

UNC Tar Heels Add Quarterback Taron Dickens

Bill Belichick has been making adjustments to the North Carolina Tar Heels’ roster as he seeks to improve following an unimpressive start to his college coaching career. Recently, the team brought in Taron Dickens, who previously played quarterback for Western Carolina, marking the third QB addition this offseason.

In addition to Dickens, UNC has also acquired Billy Edwards Jr. from Wisconsin and Miles O’Neal from Texas A&M. Dickens had a strong performance in the 2025 season, accumulating 3,508 passing yards with 38 touchdowns and just two interceptions over three years at Western Carolina, where he threw for a total of 5,063 yards and achieved a 74 percent completion rate.

Entering a competitive QB environment, Dickens will face tough challenges this spring as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Last year, the Tar Heels ended with a disappointing 4-8 record, partly due to an off-field issue involving Belichick’s personal life.

Despite speculation about potential NFL coaching opportunities, Belichick reaffirmed his commitment to UNC, focusing on assembling a stronger team for the 2026 season. Last season’s main quarterback, Gio Lopez, had limited success, throwing for 1,747 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Along with quarterback changes, Belichick has also been active in recruiting new players for other key positions, adding offensive lineman Andrew Threatt, tight end Jackson Warren, and defensive linemen Tarreese Brown and Jalen Harvey.
