UNC football players are not embracing Bill Belichick's long-term strategy.

Bill Belichick’s new college venture faced another tough moment on Saturday, with halftime attendance at North Carolina’s home stadium looking almost barren.

Some players on the Tar Heels are already feeling frustrated, hoping for a swift turnaround instead of being part of a lengthy rebuilding phase under the famous NFL coach.

“I’m here to win a football game, not just to focus on rebuilding,” said sophomore receiver Jordan Ship after the team’s 38-10 defeat to Clemson. “That’s my main goal,” he added.

Currently, UNC holds a record of 2-3 with Belichick leading the team, yet they’ve struggled significantly in recent matchups, suffering defeats against TCU, Central Florida, and Clemson by a staggering margin of 120-33.

On Saturday, the team quickly fell behind, trailing 28-3 in the first quarter, which led many fans to leave Kenan Stadium by halftime.

“What we really need to do is to stick to our approach, but enhance it,” Belichick noted. “It’s not that we’re doing all the wrong things; we just need to execute better.” He acknowledged that part of the issue lies in maintaining focus, and he accepts some of that falls on coaching.

Football program GM Mike Lombardi recently communicated with donors, calling this season a “reconstruction” year—a sentiment that has been echoed since Belichick took over in 2024 after a 6-7 season under former coaches Mac Brown and Freddie Kitchens.

Belichick expressed readiness to connect with recruits who want to be part of the program’s development. “We’re upfront with recruits about what we’re building here and we’re committed to that,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Belichick mentioned that the upcoming game against California on October 17 will not lead to immediate personnel changes based on long-term strategies. “Those who deserve to play will play,” he stated. “It won’t depend on age or anything else. We will see how it shapes up.”

He concluded on a hopeful note, saying, “My aim is to have a productive week in preparation for CAL.”
