Notre Dame Triumphs Over UNC in Rainy Showdown
Notre Dame managed to overcome a brief challenge from North Carolina, finishing the game with a 37-26 victory on a rainy afternoon at Kenan Stadium.
Quarterback C.J. Carr put on a stellar performance, completing 21 of 29 passes for 234 yards, along with four touchdown passes, and adding a rushing touchdown with 15 yards. Jordan Faison, the standout wide receiver, caught eight passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Although ranked No. 3, Notre Dame had a shaky start as UNC came out strong. The Tar Heels forced a punt on Notre Dame’s opening drive and quickly took the lead with a swift seven-play, 74-yard drive, capped by quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter, making it 7-0.
Following that, Notre Dame surged back, scoring 21 consecutive points. They responded with a touchdown drive, then intercepted Edwards on the first play of the next UNC possession, setting up a 12-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Jaden Greathouse, putting the Irish ahead 14-7.
Edwards threw another interception shortly after, this time in Notre Dame territory. The Irish capitalized on this opportunity, advancing down the field to extend their lead to 21-7 with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Faison.
With about seven and a half minutes left in the second quarter, it seemed like Notre Dame was in control. They attempted to stretch their advantage at the UNC 3-yard line, going for it on fourth-and-goal, but the Tar Heels’ defense held firm, forcing an incompletion and taking over on downs. UNC then executed its best drive of the day, covering 97 yards in 15 plays, and scoring just before halftime to settle the score at 21-14.
In the second half, UNC began with intensity, as Jaden Jefferson ran the kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown. However, due to a bad snap, they missed the extra point, leaving the score at 21-20.
Notre Dame quickly responded with a significant 17-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, which included three fourth-down conversions. Carr, deftly navigating the rainy conditions, scrambled for a 3-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal.
Not long after, Notre Dame scored again on an efficient eight-play, 68-yard drive, finishing with a 6-yard touchdown pass to running back Nolan James Jr., making the score 34-20 early in the fourth quarter.
Next, Notre Dame continued to dominate, culminating in a 31-yard field goal from Spencer Porath, extending their lead to 37-20.
Late in the fourth quarter, Edwards found Jelani Thurman for a 14-yard touchdown, marking UNC’s first offensive touchdown of the second half, but the game was already out of reach at 37-26.
With this victory, Notre Dame improved to 5-0 and will aim to maintain their momentum against Stanford next Saturday. UNC, now at 2-2, will look to recover as they face Pittsburgh on the road the same day.
