North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on a broken right foot after being stretchered off during the season opener at Minnesota and taken to a hospital.
The school released an update on Johnson's condition on Friday, saying he underwent surgery in Minneapolis with his parents by his side. He is expected to return to Chapel Hill in the coming days and make a full recovery.
Connor Harrell, who played for the Tar Heels in last season's bowl game after Drake Maye entered the draft, led the team the rest of the way in Thursday's 19-17 win at Minnesota and is expected to take over the starting role for Saturday's home game against Charlotte.
Johnson, the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, transferred from Texas A&M and replaced Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft, as the starter over Harrell, but was injured in the third quarter of the game when his leg bent awkwardly after being thrown to the ground by a blitz by Justin Worley.
Johnson immediately clutched his knee and remained on the ground for several minutes before being carried off the field on a stretcher.
The fifth-year quarterback, who began his two-year career at Louisiana State, completed 12 of 19 passes for 71 yards and one interception and ran for a score. The team awarded Johnson the game ball after the game.
