Uncle of slain NJ police officer Joseph Azcona blames parents of 14-year-old suspect for his murder

Joseph Azkona, the murdered Newark police uncle, said the family was shocked by the tragic death.

“It's crazy,” Azcona's uncle Juan G. Lopez told the post when asked about the young man suspected murderer.

“I've been around for over 40 years and that surprised me.”

He also said he denounced the young teenager whose name had not been released and committed a bloody murder.

“It's the parents. The way they grew up, the parents,” he said.

Lopez spoke as a large group of families who gathered in Newark on Saturday night at the home of Juan, Azcona's father.

The shocked relatives still agreed to the detective's sudden, violent death.

The grieving father, put all his might by the pointless murder of his son Joseph, was not too emotionally distraught.

Lopez spoke about the pain of the loss.

“We work in Newark City. We pay taxes. We are businessmen. This hurts because we keep things straight and we don't take medicine,” Lopez said.

The 14-year-old suspect allegedly fired with an automatic weapon around 6:30pm on Friday. Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stevens said 29 bullets were sent to Azkona and his partner before the barrage collided.

The five-year unit veteran died Saturday morning surrounded by family members at a university hospital. At the university hospital, Azkona's still unknown partner who survived the shootout is currently undergoing treatment.
