Champagne Bottle from Princess Diana and King Charles III’s Wedding Set for Auction
A bottle of champagne from the wedding of Princess Diana and King Charles III in 1981 is scheduled for auction next week, and interestingly, it’s still full.
The bottle, a Dom Pérignon Vintage 1961, was specially created for the royal couple’s wedding on July 29, 1981. It’s being auctioned by Bruun Rasmussen, a Danish house located in Kongens Lyngby, which is a short drive from Copenhagen.
The auction is set to start on December 11, with estimated selling prices ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 Danish kroner, which is about $78,000 to $95,000. The auction house has noted that they anticipate notable interest from royal memorabilia collectors as well as seasoned wine aficionados.
Bruun Rasmussen has stated that such a bottle is incredibly rare to find on the market. They described the item as “bespoke,” highlighting its significance as a unique piece from a globally recognized event and emphasizing its cultural importance to Britain.
Thomas Rosendahl, the head of wine at Bruun Rasmussen, mentioned that there are only 12 magnum bottles created for the marriage. He also expressed, perhaps with a touch of nostalgia, that he hasn’t encountered a bottle with such a rich narrative and background.
The seller, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the bottle “many years ago” from a prominent British wine trader. When asked about the wine’s drinkability, Rosendahl confidently assured that it is still in good condition. He reflects on the thorough processes they undertake to ensure the quality of each bottle, examining them closely under light to check for freshness.
It seems there’s quite a bit of excitement surrounding this auction—after all, who wouldn’t want to own a piece of history linked to one of the most notable weddings of our time? But the nail-biting suspense of how much it will sell for remains. It’ll be fascinating to see how this unfolds in just a few days.
