Unconcerned About Illegal Residents, Even When It Takes a Toll on Community Resources

Denver Mayor Discusses Immigration and Resource Allocation

In a recent broadcast on Colorado Public Radio’s Colorado Masters, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston expressed his views on illegal immigration. He mentioned that many can relate to the stories of those who have crossed into the United States. “I think it’s something we all do, sharing those experiences,” he said. He acknowledged that cities sometimes need to reallocate resources, which can include closing recreation centers and gyms to support individuals living in the country unlawfully.

Co-host Ryan Warner pointed out that some people are upset by the notion of individuals entering the country illegally, questioning if the mayor understands this frustration. Johnston responded, noting that understanding personal journeys can foster empathy. He shared an example from his experience as a school principal, recalling a student whose father drove him to school that morning, emphasizing the sacrifices made for a better life, including joining the U.S. military.

Johnston further added that many seek to follow the rules—applying for permits and paying taxes—simply wanting the same opportunities as everyone else. In response to Warner’s comment about the potential frustration caused by closing facilities to accommodate these individuals, Johnston acknowledged the challenges. “We have to make difficult decisions,” he said, reflecting on the importance of ensuring safety and warmth for those arriving in the city.
