Vikings Face Turmoil Amid QB Issues
Perhaps they should have opted for Sam Darnold after all.
The Minnesota Vikings, who had impressive seasons with 13 wins in 2022 and 14 in 2024, are now dealing with internal strife. Reports suggest growing tensions within the team.
On his podcast, Alec Lewis from The Athletic remarked, “I sensed an underlying tension between the team and the coaching staff. There was a certain joy in our past seasons with double-digit wins, and that seems absent now.”
This unrest can likely be traced back to a slew of injuries and questionable decision-making at the quarterback position.
Currently, starting quarterback JJ McCarthy struggled in the limited games he played and missed significant time due to a high ankle sprain. This followed a rookie season lost to a torn meniscus.
Backup quarterback Carson Wentz is out for the year after a shoulder injury and didn’t perform well even before that.
Wentz appeared in discomfort during last Thursday’s heavy 37-10 loss to the Chargers.
With McCarthy sidelined for six weeks, the idea of relying on Wentz raised eyebrows.
“I’m not naive,” Wentz commented regarding the injury situation. “I understand what I signed up for. Nobody pressured me. Communication from everyone involved has been excellent. I was aware of everything going on.”
Matthew Koller, formerly of ESPN and now with Purple Insider, highlighted the dysfunctional locker room dynamics. He noted, “This situation illustrates that our training staff hasn’t been effective this year. There are too many injuries being mishandled.”
Koller echoed sentiments from others who expressed concern: “This is how you lose control of a locker room, and it leaves players frustrated.”
Coach Kevin O’Connell, who is in his fourth season, is recognized as one of the league’s best offensive strategists.
Adding to the concern is the peculiar quarterback situation, especially considering the Vikings had the chance to pick up Darnold and Daniel Jones during the offseason. They even passed on signing Aaron Rodgers, believing in McCarthy’s potential.
As for McCarthy, he is anticipated to return this week for his third NFL start against the Lions, a key NFC North rival.
