Understanding Glyphosate: Key Information About the Widely Used Pesticide

Glyphosate Awareness Grows Amid Controversy

Glyphosate is becoming a more familiar term, especially with the ongoing Maha movement. For anyone unfamiliar, glyphosate is a chemical found in popular weed killers, such as Roundup, which is widely used in the United States. Since it was introduced in 1970, manufacturers and various regulatory bodies have claimed it’s safe for both humans and the environment.

However, surprising as it may be, we are now acknowledging that glyphosate is, in fact, carcinogenic.

In a recent conversation, Nicole Shanahan hosted Dr. Chuck Benbrook, an agricultural economist educated at Harvard, to discuss this troubling issue.

“The evidence most strongly correlates glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicide exposure with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” Dr. Benbrook pointed out. This cancer targets the lymphatic system and hampers the body’s ability to fend off infections. He also mentioned that recent research is linking glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides to leukemia.

Dr. Benbrook elaborated, stating that glyphosate disrupts the formation of new blood cells in bone marrow, which can lead to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia.

Despite the mounting evidence of glyphosate’s harmful effects, many farmers remain steadfast in their support of it, resisting stricter regulations or possible bans. Dr. Benbrook noted that glyphosate is considered “fascinating” by farmers, providing them with a straightforward way to tackle weeds and pests.

This reliance on pesticides has led to a thriving industry that actively protects these chemicals. Similar to how vaccine manufacturers gained legal immunity from injury claims through the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, the pesticide industry is pushing hard to alter legal protections, aiming to limit lawsuits against them in state courts.

While the USDA National Organic Program bans synthetic pesticides, including glyphosate, in organic farming, it seems like a sensible choice to avoid glyphosate’s dangers.

Yet, it’s a complicated matter. Nicole mentioned that she has heard from many parents who consume organic foods, and despite their efforts, urine tests show elevated glyphosate levels.

Dr. Benbrook emphasized the challenge of completely avoiding glyphosate in the American diet, stating that it can be present in restaurant food, drinking water, and even the air we breathe. “It’s widespread in the environment and food supply,” he remarked.
